Steady rain wreaks havoc on your property. Excess water can saturate the soil, undermine your home’s foundation, and eventually lead to indoor flooding.

Below, there are three ways you can prevent basement flooding and the damage that comes with it:

  • Create a Slope: Grading your yard to create is one of the most effective ways to prevent basement flooding. The slant will stop water from collecting around your foundation. Instead of seeping into your basement, the water is diverted back to the street.
  • Clean Your Gutters: When your home’s gutters are blocked with debris like twigs and leaves, they can’t channel rainwater away from your home. Although many homeowners only clean their gutters in the spring and fall, more frequent cleaning can also keep ice and snow from forming clogs.
  • Extend the Downspouts: If the downspouts attached to your gutters are too close to your foundation, consider extending them. This way, rainwater won’t seep into your basement and cause flooding. Instead, it will be redirected to a storm drain on your street.
